Expectancy Theory Violation Blog - 2/2/22

Statement: " Explain whether you agree or disagree with the statement : A violation can never be positive"

I would say that I disagree with this statement because I feel that a violation depending on the context, relationship, person , position, or circumstances can rule out whether or not an action constitutes as being negative or positive. One example of me saying this is my room mate. Living with one another is fun but as we know, little negatives begin to show. One negative is her habit of cooking in the kitchen and then leaving her dishes to pile up over the course of the week and weeks on end. Besides talking to her about it , nothing really had changed until this semester. My preconceived notion was to gear myself for another semester of piled plates but to my surprise the other night right after she finished cooking she washed out all her dishes and has been doing so ever since. Therefore knocking out my initial prediction in a positive way.

In my opinion, I find it inappropriate to violate expectations when one proceeds to do something that allows another individual to have a negative reaction/ response to the action. On the other hand, I find it appropriate to violate expectations when it will benefit the outcome of a situation. relationship , etc in a positive manner. The violation influence the outcome of SPT by possibly enforcing imaginary barriers that we would have set in place in lieu of situations where we may find ourselves disclosing rather personal facts about ourselves. \
